The German Post Offices in the Ottoman Empire

This page is under construction (aren't they all?). Although I am happy to act as editor of the page, I need some feedback from anyone who can offer constructive criticism (is the layout a sensible one?), extra information, suggestions for development and so on. Please send ideas to me. I will be adding more information of my own, but would like to have feedback from anyone who finds this page useful and can add more data to it.

This information has been collected from a number of sources including Stanley Gibbons Catalogue, part 7 (Germany), Michel: Deutschland-Spezial-Katalog, Steichele: The Foreign Post Offices in Palestine 1840-1918 and my collection of postal history from Palestine and the Middle East.

There were German post offices in five towns/cities, Beirut (Lebanon), Constantinopel (Istanbul, Turkey), Jaffa (Israel), Jerusalem (Israel/Palestinian Authority), Smyrna (Izmir, Turkey). (I use the German spelling of Constantinople, as that is the form used on the postal markings.

Beirut, Constantinopel, Jaffa, Jerusalem and Smyrna.

The post office operated from 1st March 1900 until 30th September 1914.

It was opened shortly before the visit of the German Kaiser (Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albrecht von Hohenzollern [also known as Kaiser Wilhelm II]) and his party to the Middle East.
